I recently got a basket case 281xp for a song. 1 piston, ring, and gasket set later she runs like a champ! I didn't even have to mess with carb settings. Lots of compression and luckily starts right away. Took the 20 inch bar off of my Makita until my 24 inch GB Titanium comes in. I hope this is enough bar to put a load on the motor.

I hope you enjoy the saw! I've got a 288xp (virtually the same saw) and it wears a 20" bar some of the time. A 281/288 cuts pretty darn well wearing a 20".

281xp, hey I ran one of those before. I ran my buddie's 281. Nice saw, ran good. It had a 20" bar on it too. I wouldn't mind getting one and rebuilding it. I would say keep the 20" on it and get another 20" for the makita.;)
