putting a new piston and rings in my 288. read somewhere about not using a base gasket. do you use flange sealant or anything?

Search 'check squish' or similar to learn about setting the squish clearance between the piston top and cylinder.
Use a fuel resident sealant like threebond 1184 or equivalent such as 'hondabond', 'motoseal', etc.
Great saw, have fun with it...
 
Anything above .020" works. The closer to that the more ideal. Last one I did with gasket delete was around .030"
