298xp cleaning

Y’all have any luck with any chemicals? I’ve had a bit of luck w the S100 cycle cleaner-

That's the first 298 I've seen with the hex decal. Interesting because I thought they were all square and had a plastic cover.

Can you show us the serial number? This has me intrigued.

3 series of 298, the first two had the fragile plastic starters/square tag
IPL 1986-04,
IPL1987-01, this is mine , but is now updated to 2101 starter
IPL1987-06 this series had stock the 2101 pull starter with hex tag/decal

Looks like dave is more knowledgeable than I, but I’d be happy to get the serial number after dinner if you’re still curious:)

On a side note- for such a giant CC saw theynaure have a small exit on the muffler. I hate to modify such a classic, but I’m sure there are gains in an exhaust mod..... anybody tried this?

I saw scar ported one..... looked like a beast. But I’m not grinding on this cylinder.

Sure if you like. Mine is an early production one then...

I would not modify a good stock muffler IMO. Parts are too rare to cut anything up. You could probably get a beat up muffler to play with for cheap on eBay. These saws are so loud I don't think anyone wants to add to the noise. That and maybe they feel they have enough umph?

And of course the lack of the manual/supplemental oiler limits this saw to a measley 36" bar.
These were the mufflers offered in the IPL's
first two series:
503 41 69-01 * screen
503 41 69-02 * open
Both of these are side exit

last series only:
503 53 06-01 & screen baffle cover *baffle cover
503 53 06-02FF *& screen, side exit

The 06-01 muffler is front exit and able to made into the "jungle"muffler configuration by leaving out the 2 internal components(same as 2101). I found a NOS one fairly cheap and bought it. This muffler shown as my icon/pix

Thanks for all the info, Dave. Mine has the side exit/baffle. Looking at it, there isn’t a good way to do a MM without losing he stock look. So, it will stay as is.

These are a heavy/impractical saw.... but they sure pull!

I’d probably sell it by the pound..... :laugh::crazy2:

In all seriousness... these things are so expensive to ship that it makes selling almost not worth it! That’s what the CAD told me anyway...
 
298XP PHO 18lb12.5oz less than 2 lb more than a 66cc pioneer farmsaw.
IMO, it should be every bit as valuable (if it has the later starter upgrade) as the 2100/2101XP, if you are not contemplating using over a 36" bar.
FWIW starter upgrade does also require the flywheel too!

Dave- my recoil cover isn’t plastic. It all seems very well built to me. Based off the info you provided above, i believe that this must be a late series 298.

At 18 lbs (12 Oz)that makes the 298 1.5 lbs over the 395 @ 17lbs 4oz.

It’s too bad that there aren’t more parts available for these beasts.
