We have a 36’ diameter America Elm that died last fall and was cut down. It is laying in backyard and is about 30 ft long, There are also some large limbs available to be cut. I would like a mantle piece or to sell the wood instead of having it picked up by tree company. The problem it is behind our 40 ft garage. Front garage has 18’ wx9’high door, rear door is 7’highx8’wide. Anybody interested in SE Michigan.Or any suggestions?

That may be Gray Elm. Very pretty grain when stained with Red Chestnut Stain. I would suggest chainsaw milling down to manageable size cants and then finding someone to bandsaw mill into boards. Here is a clock I made from Gray Elm. Powder post beetles got into the sapwood as it dried but the heartwood was solid. I had a lot of waste because of that.

I have a mantle made from American Elm above my fireplace. My dad cut down a dead elm and ripped it with his chainsaw . It is about 12" wide, 5" thick and 84" long. It looks pretty cool. Special to me though .

My saw with 20inch max length bar won’t quite do the job and will probably burn out long before hitting the heartwood. Hoping someone nearby has a portable mill or chainsaw mill
