.404 chain on a 3/8 rim???

So I pulled the clutch on my PP655 because I snagged a new 24" 3/8 bar for it, and was gonna change the rim as well. When I got it off, come to find out it had a 3/8 rim on it already.... somehow it worked fine, but... I sure never expected that, since it came with a .404 bar and chain on it.. granted, bot the correct mount bar, but, that's a different story..

I would imagine that .404 chain was skipping something fierce on a 3/8's sprocket. you sure that chain is .404. I've never got a saw like that so wouldn't know how it would work. I do know that a .404 chain don't fit on a 3/8's sprocket worth a damn. good you noticed and made things right :msp_thumbup:

I'm sure the chain, and bar were .404. The rim is oregon and marked 3/8-7, identical to the new one I put on. The rim almost looks like it had the slots enlarged to fit. I have 2 loops of .404, so I know it's correct. I'll go grab a pic.

I am 100% positive that the .404 chain had worn that sprocket out.

Here's the edge of the rim, looks a bit hogged out, but not bad IMO

I would not use that rim that was running the .404 with your 3/8 chain, if the .404 fit in there nicely the 3/8s will move around in there causing excessive wear and failure, that is now a small .404 7 rim as a regular .404 7 rim is nearly the same size as a 3/8 8 rim.

that sprocket must be worn quite a bit to fit the .404 chain. I don't have anymore new or used 3/8's sprockets kick'n to show you what it should look like with .404 on a 3/8's rim. when new the chain don't fit in the rim like that pic is showing.

I see the chain is riding high on the rim in that picture, sort of compensating for the too small diameter and too short pitch of the rim....

It definitely wasn't right, I'm surprised the chain ran on it ok. It couldn't have been smooth for sure in the beginning...

Surprising since the previous owner was a logger, but not really since the .404 bar was a large mount (not sure if Stihl or Husky) that was modified poorly, and the free 032 that came with it showed zero maintenance.
