The max RPM is a number that a bone stock saw with stock muffler opening should turn.

Change the muffler the RPM will change. The saw will turn higher RPM, both at idle and top end. You can add more fuel and keep it under the manufacuters so called limit, it will run rich, just read the plug. I have found opening the muffer up on the larger new stihls will take the RPM up into the higher 14k range or more to give the best cut times and plug readings. It is a fact of life thought that the faster it goes the faster it wears out, the decision is yours.

Just some thoughts;
In at least some cases the stock mufflers are a bit less restricted on the Euro versions than on the US ones.
Based on what Timberwolf said, could that be the reason for differences in allowed rpms???

Unlike most of the smaller models, both the Euro and US 440s and larger are made in Germany, but the mufflers could be different anyway....

Hi SawTroll,

I think you're right on that, it would explain the RPM difference for the 460 if the USA muffler is in some way restricted (spark screens etc.).

Bye
