Need to drop a dead 5ft DBH Oak trunk.
will rig up pull angle with 3/4in bull rope.

been awhile since I had to drop a big one so I'm not near strong as I used to be.
using 48in Stihl bar ..

question ... Stihl 064, 660, MS650 or 084 with 48in bar?

Is that a large mount bar? The 084 will have larger studs than the others. At least around here, a lot of people will face a large tree with the smaller saw, as it's just easier to clean the face up with the lighter saw. The 880 sized saws will then get used for the back cut. These are usually very large softwoods though, like Redwood.

The last time I had to cut a big oak down, I went straight to the 880 for all my cuts. I've got a pretty healthy running 066, but all of my 3/8" chains are set up for cutting softwoods, so they are a bit grabby for something like oak.

pictured stihl 48in bar fits on all saws listed I think .. but I've never mounted 48in bar on 064.
sure would like to use 064 with 48in bar due to weight
but does a good running 064 have enough grunt to handle a 48in bar?

Not really and your oil feed will be lacking.

Get the 28" out and lay your cut lines and face first. The large mounts are 14mm 3002 and need adapters to fit the 12mm 3003 mount.

None of us like getting out the big beast but when you need it you need it. I run a 41" or 60" on mine so it's definitely not fun after about three seconds in the cut. The 660 runs up to a 40" but likes the 36" better when not milling on the alaskan.

660 will pull a longer bar then an 064, better clutch little more torque.
as stated above, 084's have different mounts
you can likely get away with that long of a bar on a 90cc saw, the oiler will be overworked and it will chip clog readily, but keep a skookum sharp chain on it and it will getter done.
084's are heavy, but you only need to hold it up long enough to get it started, let the wood do the heavy lifting after that.

just tried fitting 48in bar to 064 .. that's a no go
looks like 084 gets the job ..
or 064 with a shorter bar?

got a 460 for all the initial duties ..

no lean .. with 3/4 bull rope guiding fall
should be a minimal fuss drop

looks like everyone is right about 48in bar mounts only fitting an 084 class saw.
sure don't want to use that heavy bastard 090g :D

thanks for pointing out a 32in bar with 660 combo
you can really tell it's been a long time since this gear has seen daylight

dug out 2x 36in Stihl bars .. now gotta dig up the chains and sharpen

I prefer the 66 with Sugi 32"lw. **** that 084! for anything but milling.

Oak trunk is down .. used 064 with 36in bar, 3/8 skip chain
3/4in bull rope into Birmingham portawrap anchored into nearby large Oak as backup.
then massadam rope wrench applying main pulling load.

sorry no pics .. was so focused on getting job done flat forgot.
