My tree-hugging landlords would never agree to the tree coming down...The annual flooding this spring will take some toll, I'm sure, as it is in the flood plain of the South Branch of the Potomac.

I will do what I can afford to do and hope that no accidents happen in between!

All your comments have been excellent! The tree has been sketched by about 6 artists, whose drawings and watercolors are in our house. Everyone wants to draw, paint or photograph the poor old thing. The former caretaker has a series of about 12 sculptures made from the fallen wood. I personally hope it lives another 300 years!

But I will never stay quiet when I know of someone building a road too close to an old tree. I will give them that "formula" (Thanks, Jay Banks) and remember to tell them to contact an arborist (Thanks, JPS for the links).

Don't build on the roots or else you won't have anything to paint....:mad:

Hazard = risk plus target.

Easiest mitigation of hazard is to move any targets.

Now if this tree was outside a preschool, I'd be advising removal right away!

All we can do is strongly advise the property owner and make them aware of the responsibilities they have.

It falls you pay.

They must weight their options and you must help them see their options.
