ok, straighten out the circular arguement please: why did the squish band need cutting? is a flatter combustion chamber preferrable to the factory shape?

Sometimes the squish band isn't even/flat, you can get a lip or two from where the hone bumped the band and the rest of it is as cast so taking a lick off it evens things up.
You do have to be careful if going for a cc reduction in the chamber as the plating sometimes doesn't go all the way to the top of the cylinder, so you may not be able to go too deep on the cut.
 
put it together just to see what it gained so far.

gained a little.
i want to raise the ex port, but can't untill i get the piston welded up.
made a piston collect.

the second one has a free trial that you can play with. it will teach you alot about what changes to a port does to the engine.
