The people were not home at the time, because "Earlier in the day, Michelle McCarthy had been in a car accident. The couple were in Marin County dealing with that crash when one of their neighbors called to tell them that their house had been destroyed."

My day is not so bad after all.....

Talk about conflicting tragedys.

Car wreck= Bad.
Bieng in the house when some doofus drops a crane through it= Worse than a car wreck.

OUCH!!!
#### happens, and when it does, it always comes in three's, so those folks need to be darn carefull for a while!
Judging by the first two, the third is gonna be biblical in scope.

Stay safe!

i liked this part:

The couple moved into the house in August, and an arborist had strongly recommended they have the aging and sick tree removed for safety, Kevin McCarthy said.

Man, im glad I had nothing to do with that job.Wonder who is going to end up paying the damages, tree service or crane company? From the story, seems that the tree company's employee shock loaded the boom, but on the other hand, the operator should have been aware of what his rig could stand.....

My FIL several yrs ago hired a crane to move a garage about 30' back on his property and it fell over in the process almost destroying the garage. Must be fairly common.

Crane operator will be found at fault.

It is the operators responsibility to know the weight of the load and capability's of the crane. Others may share some of the blame but OSHA will plop most of it down on the operator and as a result the company that he works for.

my brother sent me the first link this morning. The repost link is way better: It includes an aerial view of 'what the h were they thinking' picture shot.

Nice crane but that is a lot of stick when you see the aerial shot.

Big Trees are Heavy

People just plain underestimate the weight and power of a big tree. I once saw a big cottonwood drag a 20-ton Caterpillar crawler tractor backwards for 30 feet as it fell. The tree looked at that tractor and said, "Come with me, my pet."

This picture proves it even further. Holy Cow!

if people would go to the calculators from different boards, and figure out the weight of some large tree rounds--it would surprise the h out of them!!!

Un freekin real it ain't that hhard to cut it smaller especially with a nice crane sheesh.Idiots like that is why my insurance goes up each year<a href="http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&lpver=3&ref=11" target="_blank"><img src="http://content.sweetim.com/sim/cpie/emoticons/0002041D.gif" border="0" title="Click to get more." ></a>

This is what happens when kids figure they'll never need trigonometry.

Jack

No actually its the college boys that do that sorta thing it only takes experiance and commonsense to avoid toppling a crane. With trig and calculus no doubt they could figure out the vector required to topple the crane but they would be more inclined to take all they could which is what causes these problems. Take it small it won't hurt you to cut it smaller.
