I'd think anything that would retain heat would work.

How about getting soapstone cut to standard firebrick dimensions and replacing all the firebrick. Would it be any better?

How about making the first section of pipe out of something that would retain and radiate heat? Might cool the exhaust to the point of creosote buildup though.

There was an old soap stone wood stove at the deer camp when we bought it, it was replace in a couple of years with a bigger stove.
That soap stone will hold a lot of heat once it gets hot.

I have a VC defiant/encore and about 4 years ago I found a 4ft x 2ft piece of beautiful red marble sitting by a dumpster in the alley. I placed it directly on top of the stove and warming shelves. I do not know if it helped but it looks nice, I can place more stuff on top of the stove and it will still be warm in the morning after an all night burn. One's man trash is another man's treasure
