I took down a couple trees just like this over the weekend. It is in oak country, smells like oak but grows much faster as the trees are very young compared to the one's farther up the bank.

They are on the edge of a slough, patially in the water. Very straight grain, splits and almost looks like pine when open but that could be caused by the fast growth.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Can I inquire as to what brings you gentlemen to that conclusion?

I need to learn how to ID trees in the worst way...!

I think it is ash. I identified it from the bark and from the first picture it looks to have opposite branching which the maples and ash have.

To paraphrase another member here,
If it looks like Oak and isnt, it's probably Ash.

I vote Ash. The bark just makes me think "mmmmmmmmmm Ash". The structure of the tree, branch collars and ease of splitting points me in that direction too.
