Another wood ID

I was told it might be hackberry but i think the bark seems a little smooth for that. Real heavy and feels like its pretty dense. Any IDeas? I'll get some splits tomorrow if you guys think that'll help.

The bark is a bit smooth for Hackberry but I do believe that is exactly what it is. I've seen some with smoother bark like that and some with extremely deep, rough bark.
The cut ends look right for it.

I couldn't get a good pic on my phone earlier today. On the laptop now and going with the other guys on Hackberry . i never knew the real name till I got on AS. Dad always called it Sugar Nellie.

Your dad might be on the right track with the "sugar", read the description of Sugarberry or Southern hackberry. Range goes into Iowa and is described as hackberry with less furrowed bark.

Hackberry, a ton of it here in Kansas. Decent firewood, not a top ten candidate but far from the worst. Split and left uncovered in the elements will take its toll on it after a couple of years around here.

Same here in Iowa @REJ2, burned a lot of it, way better than cottonwood soft maple, not really the best firepit wood though, doesn't really have the most pleasant smell when burnt.

You will actually find a bunch of powdery wood dust around it after a year or so, bugs seem to really like once its down

Yes you will, under the right conditions you can hear them crunchin and munchin! Lots of borers seem to like hackberry.
