Thanks for replying and I'll try to get some new pictures today. Here is another picture I took yesterday with a couple leaves and nuts I found at the tree. This is a heavily wooded area so trees are close together.
A pic of some split pieces would help too.
Walnut family.
That's what I thought at first glance but turn the brightness all the way up on your computer and look at how there is a tint of Red in the Heartwood. Could be Walnut though pics have a way of distorting color.
As mentioned it's a walnut.
Probably a native black walnut.

Well prob since it has Walnuts on the second pic.
Looks like some hickory shell pieces are in the photo, too.
Plus it is nice to zero in on just what kind of walnut it may be.
I thought our native butternut were the same as the English walnut?
Well when he posts more pics hopefully later then.
The bark looks like the tree on the right, but these two trees hang over the tree in question. Thanks for all your help...Just curious with about dozen other people now on Facebook. I told them I would have to go to the experts on this and they are as curious as me.

Looks like black walnut to me.
The nuts are hickory but the wood looks like
Walnut. The standing tree on the left looks like what we call a "scaley bark" hickory in the south aka shag bark. Might be where the nuts came from. I don't believe it to be hickory because it doesn't split clean like what is in the photo. I vote walnut.

The wood is Black Walnut . The standing live tree in the pic on the left is Hickory.

Tree on right a Red or Black Oak.
