Is it crucial to prune an apple tree in the spring or can i prune it in late fall early winter? I reside in Alaska.

Early spring...yes, before bud break. I kinda still call that winter. Certainly not after flowering...which is what I think of as "spring".

You just want dormant pruning.

In Michigan usually late February or March says when temps don't fall below 15-20 degrees. I had good success pruning all the wild apple trees on my property and actually got apples this year. Not sure what your intentions are but never remove more than 1/3 of the trees live wood during one calendar year. Remove as much dead wood as you wish.
