I live in Southeast Ohio. My goal is to manage a deer heard that is losing habitat and food. I am going to manage the property that is mostly hillside, and there are a lot of old coal slack piles. What kind of apple tree would be a good bet to live in this enviroment and feed the deer beginning in late fall early winter when food is less plentifull?

I can`t help you with the apple tree info but I know you`ll need to keep the trees fenced off or they`ll be eaten before they have a chance to take.
Up here we feed them cedar in the winter months along with a little grain but it has to be put where they can get it because they won`t venture far from their runs because of predation.
There are many internet sites available for feeding deer.

I think apple does not realy pioneer poor sites that well. I understand that those piles are hared to establish trees on too.

There are some very fast growing hybrid poplars out there that may be an option.
