A friend of mine was at his cottage in Northern Michigan and sent me these pictures of his Ash trees wondering what was wrong with them. The emerald ash borer pretty much wiped out all the ash trees down state and from what I understand hasn't made its way up there just yet that and it doesn't look like ash borer damage. It looks like something is scratching away at the outer layer of the bark.

Any ideas?

Looks like EAB to me, there is not an ash left in the state of Michigan that will survive without very expensive injections by an arborist. The outer layer of bark gets popped off by the bug as it leaves the tree. Look for small "D" shaped holes allover the tree. EAB is as bad as dutch elm as it have all but wiped out the ash in many states......
