After trees have been stressed by wind and or ice they become vulnerable to insects and disease.

This elm survived an Ice Storm a few years back, but these large 2 1/2" Carpenterworms have had a hayday with it ever since. The heartwood had channels bored all thru it with many exit holes. They begin as tiny grub under the bark then migrate to the heartwood during a 3 year larvae cycle.
