Birds Nest Spruce bark splitting and blemish

Have a Birds Nest Spruce, generally healthy in a relatively shady area. Previous owner had some strange pruning habits. Cleaned it up early last spring.
Noticed this at the time, some splitting of the bark and some dark blemishing in the same area. Is this a disease or something else?

@greenfoot Just a wild guess, but I would guess your PO sliced a flap up, then decided to lay it back down. I doubt you have a disease process.

Could be the beginning stages of Cytospora Canker. I'm not sure how prevalent that is in your area or on that species though.
