canker/borer combo?

the other day i was at a site that had 2 trees (pin oaks) both with holes in the trunk at about 2 ft above the ground. they were not typical borer holes. they were about the size of a quarter through the bark and then just slightly larger than what you would expect a borer hole to be within the cambium. any ideas would be appreciated.

This is a longhorned beetle exit hole.

The gouges in the bark around it are the ovipository wounds.
