I got frustrated not being able to get old parts for the saws I repair and I finally I got my hands on a mini metal lathe and did a little review, hope you enjoy!
I currently have a 7x14 that belongs to a friend sitting on my bench, it has less useable swing than my ancient Craftsman 109 6x12. I would not want something smaller than an 8" swing on one of those new ones for doing cylinder work. I had a hard time getting enough cross side travel out of it to do a Partner 5000(think Husky 50/55) base cut, while I have cut a 3120 jug on the Craftsman...jaws big enough to do a base/band cut on a cylinder?
I have a bit of everything, I got a pile of tooling with the Craftsman. Are you shaping your own bits from blanks?
I’m sure I can yes, but if you want to do it consistently I recommend a bigger lathe. More mass will help overcome the vibration.jaws big enough to do a base/band cut on a cylinder?
