I am choosing trees to plant in my yard in the hills of Berkeley, CA. I have lots of challenges, but mainly we just installed $70K of retaining walls and french drains and don't want to plant trees with aggressive root systems that will break up those walls (at least not for the next 10 years if possible). I really wanted to plant a willow but someone told me the roots are water seekers and they would go after the french drains. HERE'S THE QUESTION: Is there a resource on the Internet that can give me the root growth systems of many choices so I can narrow my selections and do better research? Also, it has been recommended that I look into White Ash, Aspens, Redwoods, and Dogwoods. Any comments?

HIre a consulting arborist to assess the site and review some recommendations. I know of one who will be in the area this weekend--email me for info if you want.
