The wimpy bug dope now days is probably not as severe as the good bug dope of old.

I think the fact that DEET will melt plastic is why it works on headlights. Smooths the faded areas by melting the plastic so the surface tension of the liquefied plastic can smooth over and become clear. Once the solvents evaporate then the plastic can harden again. You just want to be sure to not touch it while its melted.
