bought my house in MN 3 years ago, and have this beautiful large cottonwood tree. Building an addition which will be within 4 feet of it. Is it healthy enough where should live another 20-30 years? I’d hate to build a new addition that have to take it down after.

Sounds like a circumstance where it will really pay to have an onsite consultation.
Is it just the corner of the addition that will be within 4;? Can they otherwise stay completely off of the root system of the tree while working?
How big is the tree?
Is the tree otherwise healthy?
All of these (and more) come into play when answering that question...
