I'm in the Santa Rosa-San Francisco area of northern Ca. I may be able to help somebody. There's some good saws here sometimes. I've just missed out on some great Old Iron a couple of times. Like Randy said, there are some limits on distance and such. Some saws are worth a trip to Sacramento or San Jose............while others aren't worth a walk accross the street. This thing could work well for us...

OK relative "newbie" here, so I guess I'm willing to get outa my chair! :)Actually I had a friend pick up a cherry 046 from CL for me a couple of weeks ago so I would like to offer to do someone else a favor. I am in zip code 94565 = East Bay Area but make semi-regular trips through Sacramento/Placerville/South Lake Tahoe and would try to help out anyone who has a Cl score in those areas. But I will mention that the deal with my 046 was somewhat convoluted and I had to talk my way into it. It was definitely a money talks deal - someone lost out because I was able to have my friend meet him closer than the other guy...

My little car gets around 38 MPG. It has 238,000 miles on it so I don't need anything to cover depreciation.

Toyota? Honda? Nissan? Etc?

Actually, I'd be in, too. Just that I'm a long ways from anywhere that matters. My Chev Silverado is going on 270,000 (70,000 on rebuilt long block and tranny), and the wife's Toyota 4Runner is at 200,000 (original), with lots of miles to go. But if ya find a Craig's List deal within my reach and need a bit of help, I'll help.

Why else were we put on this world if not to help each other? :)

I will help out any one I can.
And I have! I realize the frustration with trying to get a jump n a saw. If it is a rare saw or a GREAT price. If you found it in my area before me and get it lined up to make the deal and ask me, I will do my best to help!
I have had the help of MANY AS members from coast to coast to get some real cream sickles!!!! and even 7 oversea AS members have helped me!
THANKS GUYS! But the problem can arise with the assumptions some will help or they got it after I told them!

About a month ago I tried to help a member on a great saw at a GREAT price. A buddy at work live 15min. away from the seller, which would have been 1hr 45min from my house one way try to get a saw for me for a AS member! Ya the love triangle is starting. I got the info and passed to my buddy(chainsaw illiterate!). Phone number the whole nine yards. 2 days later he comes into work saying the guy threatened him. I guess the "I saw it in the ebay+c-list" thread kinda blow the guys phone up! LOL! Come later to find out the guy was a crook, and miss lead at least 4 prospective buyers. All 4 got a different story of the saw!?!?!?

Either way, when I can help I will!

SW VA. I would help anyone here out. I work all day thru the week but at a time I'm not at work (weekend) and someone needs a pickup, I could manage that.

I'd be willing to help when I can. I'm in the North Eastern part of MA, but I'm a single father and work 2 jobs...

I'll help if I can. I'm in SW Missouri, but can easily access SE Kansas, and NW Oklahoma.
I work weird hours, but sometimes that can be a good thing.

Love the idea!

You guys should consider creating a social group here on the site for yourselves. It's a great way to keep tract of discussions without having them get lost among the many threads on the main forum. Plus, you can keep the discussions private and exchange info like phone numbers and addresses just among yourselves.

watsonr sounds like a guy with above average integrity, and you need guys of similar character for something like this to work. Most guys on the site are on the up and up, and I think that once these relationships are established, you'll find that you can rely on each other.

The trust that's needed here isn't just with the payment and shipping. You have to trust that the other guy will make the right call when he actually sees the saw if he sees something that wasn't mentioned by the seller.

One glitch I see is that, as has been mentioned, a good saw deal won't last long, and you have to move quick. So, in that sense, everyone is kind of "on call". Not everyone will be able to respond quickly and drive an hour or two to check out a saw, because some of these requests will no doubt come at inconvienent times. That would be my big weakness, I have to admit, so I wouldn't do this myself.

But one thing I've found is that the more buddys you make here on the site, the more access that you have to trade and swap saws. We have a little swap meet at all our GTG's, and most of us know what the other guys are looking for. So, even if you come across something that doesn't interest you, you can grab it for another guy.

The end result is much the same: helping each other locate some interesting saws. But the urgency of chasing a saw deal for another guy, and the chances of something going haywire don't exist.

More buddys= more saws.

As others have posted, having the cash & being quick is the way to get deals on CL.

Another factor is hidden/hard-to-spot problems with saws. For example, many pawnshops around here will let me start the saws, but won't let me nose around under the covers :(. They're probably concerned about folks sabotaging the saws in order to negotiate a better price, and I understand their concerns. Showing them cash will sometimes change their minds :). I'm sure that some folks selling on CL have the same concerns, and some are probably intentionally trying to prevent potential buyers from finding hidden problems. The point is, what happens if an AS member receives a saw with problems that weren't mentioned in the CL ad? There could be hard feelings toward the local ASer who picked-up the saw.

That said, if an AS member sees something they like local to Houston, feel free to send me a PM. I rarely see any real deals on CL Houston, usually just newer saws like Poulan, Homelite, Craftsman, & sometimes Echo. The more desireable saws tend to be overpriced, & older large saws are rare.
