Need HELP !! when did the production run of 044 mags end and ms 440 begin ??? Hear in western pa i am looking for an 044 mag or a ms440, everyone that has a beat one for sale , is claiming 044 is 5- 8years old 440 mag 1 to 3 years, they say low low grandpa hours but have worn sprockets and after market bars & chains.
What is a good price for a 044 mag in good cond, what is a good price on a ms 440 good cond ?
any info on ID would help greatly THANKS JOHN

I do not think an 044 has been sold new in over 20 years now ,but i may be wrong .so 5-8 years old is a stretch ,unless they found some dealer with an nos one .

Most people selling anything claim it's only a few years old, barely used, excellent condition. Then you see it and it's beat to s**t.
I see 044/440 on Craigslist frequently 400-500$ in decent condition. Age doesn't matter so much to me as condition.

The bulletins announcing the changeover to ms440 were dated 2000-2001.
Look at the date on the sticker under the trigger for mfg date of particular saws.

Acres website puts the 044 debut at 1993, so an 044 could easily be over 20 years old. HarleyT's info above puts the MS440 intro 15-16 years ago (see also http://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/what-year-did-the-026-become-the-ms260.77661/). The MS441 came along in 2006 or so with the MS440 discontinued about a year later (http://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/stihl-ms440-last-serial-number.49317/).
