Decoding Stihl Serial Number

Was wondering if there's a system to decode the serial number on my Stihl 046... Similar to a vehicle VIN?

The first digit in a 9-digit number tells the country of manufacture. 1 is for Germany, 2 (and I think 5 as well) are for USA, 3 is Brazil, 6 is Japan, and 9 is various. I think the rest are production numbers, but I'm not sure.

generally, post the number and ask for someone to look it up.....

The serial # cant be decided, as there is no system to it. Someone with dealer access can see when the warranty is registered. If it is a newer model (1999+) Stihl can look it up and tell you.
