Looking to buy a new saw in 60cc range. I have a few 30"+ oaks to cut, but 95% of my cutting will be less than 24"diameter hardwood. I'm just cutting firewood for myself. I've been very interested in the Dolmar 6400 and I have good local dealer. I can also get a Husky 555 for about the same price. I like the Dolmars, but also appreciate the weight savings of the Husky. What do you guys recommend? I KNOW!!! Get the 562xp.... Not really intrested in the 562xp simply because its gonna cost about $100 more. trying to keep it under $600. Thanks

Is the 555 not the same saw as the 562 but with the small mount bar studs?:msp_confused:
I like them both... But would lean toward the 555...

I think it has something to do with inserts in the transfers but it's slightly detuned. Still stronger than a 362 we proved that at your place. The 555 has a real comfortable feel to it handles well too.

555 is what I'd rather have! Much Smaller Much lighter, about the same power.

Key phrase "good local dealer".Dolmar will have more reserve in bigger wood due to the torque it makes.I'm facing the same choice for the same uses.Leaning toward the 6400,have a great dealer but our regional distributor sucks.As your in GA Dolmar US's Hq that may not be a problem for you.

I would like to see a 555 hang with a 6400 with a 24" bar buried. It is very nice saw, and a nicer all around saw, but a 6400 is a very strong 64cc saw.
OP, why don't you go to Home Depot and see if they have some of the rentals for sale. They are usually about $300. Then use the other $300 to invest in a good used pro grade 50cc saw.

I had the opportunity to pick up a 555 last december for $469 new with 24" b/c. I should have got it but now own a 562xp which I paid $590 (24" b/c). I'm pretty happy with it, to say the least. :hmm3grin2orange:
The point is, deals are out there. Some of the site sponsors could probably hook you up with what you need for less than most local dealers.

No doubt the 6400 will pull harder and likely a better choice for 24" bar.
But the 555 will be so much more pleasant to run for hours at a time.
North West Ga. I have been all over Home depot. Finding those used rental saws is easier said than done. I think I would have to go to home depot everyday for 6 months to luck up and find one before it gets gone. I should have said earlier that I actually have some wood closer to 40". from what I've seen, the dolmar seems a good bit stronger.

The 6400 is a very good saw, but to bulky and heavy (for me) for a firewood saw...

....and the 6400 can always be turned into a 7900 at which point the extra weight becomes secondary.

The 555 is quite seriously detuned regarding power output, not just "slightly" - and is lacking the Revboost.

I have a Dolmar 6400 and a 562xp. The 562 is lighter and has similar power but when you step up to 24 inch bars the Dolmar pulls better. One thing i will say i have used the Dolmar for 5 years of cutting with no problems and i just got the 562.

So, you are agreeing that power trumps weight, and saying that age trumps power???
Really don't have a need For an 80cc saw. But you never know, in a year if I keep listening to you guys I will be sure that's what I need!! No doubt a good pro saw would last me 10 to 15 years before it needs rebuilding if all goes well and no one talks me into it sooner.

Most answers point in the right direction. The 555 is much more modern with AT but the 6400 is a real Rambo when it comes to cutting.
Have you considerd an alternativ? I have read a lot of praises about the echo 600p here recently. They are supposed to be quite a nice sum cheaper. Might be an alternativ idea in the power range you need.

From experience 80+ plus is nice to have around(ProMac 850 and Remington 82)but a 1K plus conversation piece I don't need.That's where the 6400 is nice 'bout an extra $100.00 and your there.
