I am renovating a 102 year old house that had very little yard space around it. To create a front lawn we had to place fill dirt approximately 2 - 3 feet deep aroudn the base of two large eastern red cedars. I installed a drain tile and suspect I will need some type of well. Any suggestions for size, type, etc? Thanks much.

2-3' of fill to make a lawn? What quality of fill dirt? 2' of sand and your old cedars may live for a while; 2' of clay and you have dead trees unless this ventilation system is foolproof.

There are many certified arborists in MD; get one out there now before you kill your trees. Deciding what kind of well to build around the trunk may be like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. I don't want you to be a weeping willow!
