HI Mom called me the other day and her fireplace the cement in the back had a crack in it. I is a modular home and the fire place was in it. She asked me if it could be fixed or was it okay to run it as it is. I really have no clue and don't want her house to burn down! (then she would have to live with me LOL) whats your guys advice. thanks

If the crack is small and low I don't see why it can't be patched with furnace refractory cement. If it is more of a structural crack then mortar might be better.
It sort of depends on the size and where it is that you need to consider.
If the crack is near the top of the firebox then you may want to have a pro look at it. I wouldn't have a problem with filling a crack in between the blocks.
Can you post a pic.?

i'm guessing it must be brick lined, since i can't imagine one made of solid cement.

did she notice a crack in the brick mortor? if so, like bolton ranger said, it can be easily fixed.
