Generator and sizing

Before we moved the home we were renting had a 10KW liquid cooled Generac, ran on propane and was on auto transfer, it was very sweet. On two occasions it ran for 7+ days in the last 2 years in addition to a host of intermittent outages. In our current place I am thinking of installing a diesel unit. Many people around here (CT) have installed propane gensets and reading about the propane shortage of this past winter I feel I would have a little more flexibility with diesel.
