One other thing that amazes me...My 13 acre woods is only about 1.5 miles from my Dad's 10 acres which is 70% pin oak with some beech, ash, small cherry, ironwood and a and few hickory mixed in. Mine is probably 20/20/20/20 ash maple hickory oak(white and red with little if any pin oak) mix with the same amount of the lesser variety trees. My woodlot has been logged twice in the last 30-40 years where Dads hasn't but why no pin oak(which is about the least desirable oak because of the knots)? My brother introduced an interesting theory that Dads woods years back was pasture to livestock and they probably chewed off the tastier saplings and thats why his is so dominated by the Pin Oak. Interesting theory but not sure if thats the reason. I just am amazed how so different our woodlots are.
