Dropped a 30” dead ash in the yard. 2 weeks ago cut the top for firewood. Then cut the stem to 5 8’ sawlogs and anchor sealed them. Finally got some time to do some milling.

I'm surprised I don't see more ash being used for woodworking projects. It really is nice and here in PA, it's all dead anyway. It's a shame to see it just rotting away. Very nice job!

Where there is a will, there is a way. I used to dig a little hole under the log, throw a rope over a big limb and pull one end up in the air with my truck. Just don't get between the truck and rope or near the underside of the log while it's up in the air. Have a short log ready to roll under the log ASAP. I've also dug a little spot out and used a floor jack or a high lift jack. Lots of ways to get the log up if you sit and think about it, Joe.

I really don't know! I use the oregon height gauge I think its .23 thousands.

Oregon raker depth setting tools come in 25, 30, 25, 40 thousands up to about 70 thousands.
If you use this type of tool you should change the tool as the cutters wear and get shorter.

25 thou suits new cutters which typically have a gullet width of 0.25"
When the gullets reach 0.30" a 30 thou raker depth setting tool should be used.
When the gullets reach 0.35" a 35 thou raker depth setting tool should be used.
When the gullets reach 0.40" a 40 thou raker depth setting tool should be used.
etc

An easier way is to set the gullets using a digital angle finder like this.

Of course you don't need to do this every time you touch the rakers. After setting the rakers like this in my shop, in the filed I give the rakers a couple of swipes every 3-4 tanks of fuel. And I give the cutters a couple of swipes after every tank.

That's about what I go through on my 066. I'm looking to make some extension bottles for fuel and bar oil.
