Picked up some Spruce this morning that had been down awhile and whacked into 16" lengths. Went to split it with the maul and it was a definate no go. I ended up halving everything with the chain saw and then after beating the heck out of it with the maul finally got it whittled down to firewood size.
I'm sure glad there's not a whole lot of that stuff around.

Everything else I've cut (Fir, Hemlock, Alder, and Maple) split easy in comparison.

What species gives you the most trouble with splitting?

Spruce for me too! But now that I have a splitter I laugh at.
