Have at least two trees in a hedge row to the east of my house that are dropping "nut" and I was wondering what they were. The only leaves still on the tree are on branches too high to get a good picture so I grabbed some of the nuts and scanned one in and will attach it here.

Not sure how clear it is but there are four evenly spaced ridges from the stem end down to about the middle of the nut.

Also have a good number of black walnuts this year after almost none last year, makes it hard to walk near those trees! Also posilby dangerous on a windy day!

Thanks for that info!
I have 2 or 3 of these trees on the hedge row east of the house. Did a search on Pignut and found this mention of the nuts: The fruit of the pignut hickory can be eaten, but it is astringent and quite bitter.
I did try a bit of the one I scanned the picture of and can attest to that description! Then found this site:

Can they be serious $12.50 plus shipping for 10 nuts? If the squirrels around here knew that they could be rich!

Also found in doing the Google search that there is another bit of vegetation by the same name:
