Harvest almonds

My almond trees are bearing nuts. I'm unsure as to when the nuts are "ripe" and should be harvested. I live in the Bay Area in California. I'd like to get the almonds before the squirrels this year. Any suggestions please?

sorry this took so long im checking all the post that have no replies, I know that most nut bearing trees start dropping their fruit when they are ready. I actually built a a squirrell gaurd on my English Walnut trees so i got some of the nuts myself. JPM
