do any of you know where I can get a heat circulating grate for a decent price? i've only seen a few online and they are around $300+. that seems a little pricey for a grate and a small fan. alternatively, do you have any suggestions for making a small open fireplace(in an apartment) more efficient?

$300 is about right. in fact, i've seen them almost twice that amount.

i bought an Arvin Heat Stream about 20 years ago..they're out of business now but i'm still using it and i'll give my wife up before i give up that thing. the heat it puts out is unbelievable. there was one on ebay a short while ago that sold for $269. those things can make the worst of fireplaces efficient heaters.

if you add glass doors that are fairly air tight, you could have a good fireplace.

holy cow!!!! found one!! they are only asking $99:
