If I remember correctly, some of the plastic cl covers got melted enough by the exhaust to cause the chain brake to fail. It's been reported on AS that there were some resulting injuries, and that husky made the change and issued a recall. One member reported that if you have one of these saws with the pl cover, you can get the mag one @ no cost.

I thought of a reason Husky changed from plastic to magnesium..........magnesium brakes easier thus Husky sells more clutch covers and makes more $$$$
Just like making the plastic crankcases on the lower end Husky saws, more saws fail...........sell more new saws and more $$$$ to be made

I suspect something is wrong with that theory...:givebeer:

For one, plastic cases on low end saws started in the early 1980s.

The reason they went to mag clutch covers on the 262xp likely was better heat resistance than plastic.

Later, Husky even used mag clutch covers on the better plastic cased saws.

The technology put into the Husqvarna 262xp is exceptional considering they were designed in the late 1980's. Top Notch Saw IMO...............As per members of this site nothing has compared until the 562xp came out. I don't own a 562xp so I couldn't tell you.
The 262xp saw with the 24" bar has seen lots of use and is one of my go to saws. All 4 are stock and equipped with the Hda 87 carb/3 piece clutches. The 3 saws without bars are for piece of mind:msp_biggrin:

That's a nice group of 262's there. And only a true work truck could have a bunch of saws sitting on the hood like that. :)
