I purchased this saw off craigslist, previous owner said carb would flood and gas would spill from saw. It did start hard and would run but not idol. Saw was all original with auto decomp, decided to update, got zama carb, intake boot and clamp new fuel line and manual decomp. pulled cylinder found some scoring below exhaust port, but didnt look excessive. Reassembled and tried to start, have good spark, but will not fire over. Finally got compression gage and only have 35 psi with decomp in or out. Saw ran before tear down. Need ideas on what to look for.

Yes the ring is in, you can put your thumb over plug hole and have almost no suction, with decomp pushed in it looks like gas is blowing back through carb and out filter intake.

You need to see if the cylinder will clean up, if it does, then a new Meter piston and you're good to go.
Very good saw and well worth fixing!

Did you ask him, what he means " gas would spill from saw"?

So you bought all that and used the old ring?
You mean 'blowing back' Into the filter?
How does the top of the piston look? Any detonation?
Still got the plug it came with?
It would make sense it would be worse if you took the ring out that was already having issues. Is the front of the piston all dark burnt looking?
