looks like the main nozzle is missing? When in doubt follow the fuel flow!

Sure looks like it. Is there a place on these carbs to locate a part number?
If so, no wonder it runs so bad! It will not idle and bogs down under WOT. That would make complete sense that it wouldn't run without the main jet.
That carb doesn’t use a check valve, the screen is missing though. I can see the little retaining ring is still there but no screen. Genuine Tillotson carb kits will come with everything you need to do a complete rebuild.
That tiny copper colored screen is what your missing.

So did these older carbs use a screen as BOTH the check valve and main nozzle for fuel delivery?
Yes. Some Tillotson carbs used a nozzle with check valve, others used just the screen. If I remember correctly the screen type are “capillary” in which the fuel would wet the screen and act as a check valve, preventing fuel from being drawn through at idle. I’d have to double check on that though. Been a while since I looked at the documentation.
