""Tree mess keeps crews busy
Branches, brush downed by December storm are being removed

CAPITAL REGION — The economy might be bad, but Buddy Allen doesn’t notice.
Allen is the owner of Buddy’s Tree Service in Hadley, which just received a contract to pick up the downed trees and brush littering Clifton Park.
“The economy is bad, but for the last couple years, it’s been really good to us,” Allen said.
After the December ice storm, home-
owners throughout the Capital Region who didn’t have trees strewn across their yard (or even in their living room) still had small limbs and brush all over their property.
The timing of the storm didn’t allow for much cleanup over the winter, as the debris was soon covered with layer upon layer of snow, so communities are dealing with the cleanup now.
All good news for those in the tree service industry, who have been working steadily throughout the winter and at a frantic pace now to get the mess cleared.
Allen said his employees have been “running like fools” since December. Typically his staff tries to take a break in the winter and head to Florida for a few weeks, but not this year. Allen said they were too busy with work.
“We’ve been busy since the ice in December,” Allen said. “Now we’re running in 100 different directions and trying to keep everything straight.”
Buddy’s Tree Service specializes in removing and trimming trees around homes, and also grinds stumps. Allen said the company is running double the normal amount of equipment, includ-
ing cherry picker trucks, grinders and chippers.
Generally, Allen said, he works with eight or nine people, but he’s had to hire more help and subcontractors because the work is “overwhelming.”
“Everyone’s lawns have a big pile of brush. We’re working in the housing developments and you pick up a pile and don’t move 20 feet before there is another one,” he said.
Allen said his employees just started picking up brush in Clifton Park on Wednesday and it should take a while before it’s all cleared.
The piles of brush and logs are going to a town site where another of his crews is working to grind them into mulch.
Rick Wilday, owner of Jime’s Tree Service in Colonie, said spring is always a busy time for his company, but this year most of his work is related to the ice storm.
“We’ve been doing a lot of cleanup, either taking trees down or cleaning the branches,” Wilday said.
Also, a lot of people have decided this is the year to take down the tree that’s been worrying them for years, Wilday said.
“People got really scared,” Allen agreed.
Allen said one good thing is he doesn’t have to worry about advertising this year. “We can’t run fast enough now to get to all the customers we’ve got,” he said.""
