"The discovery of a single specimen of an Old World woodwasp raises red
flags across the nation because the invasive insect species has
devastated up to 80 percent of pine trees in areas of New Zealand,
Australia, South America and South Africa. If established in the United
States, it would threaten pines coast-to-coast, particularly in the
pine-dense states in the Southeast."

Today in USA History: Popular rider Oliver Lewis rode H.P. McGrath's
thoroughbred Aristides to victory in the first Kentucky Derby on May 17,
1875 at the Louisville Jockey Club. Fourteen of the fifteen jockeys in
the Derby, including Lewis, were African Americans.

May 17 is Norwegian Constitution Day, a commemoration of the adoption of
Norway's constitution in 1814. Many Norwegian-American communities
celebrate the holiday in the United States.
