So a buddy of mine gave me 3 670s the other day, 1 champ and 2 super IIs. One of the supers looks to have been slightly smashed, with damage to the cylinder fins and flywheel. The other super had a stuck ring, and they all have bad clutches, with that being the only problem with the champ.

What I'm looking for is an expert on these Swedes. The search function on AS here is literally not working right now, and google is only getting me small bits of an outline of information. I need somebody to color in the picture.

In the changeover from Champ to Super, there was a reported power increase according to specs. According to at least one thread I found on another site, there were no apparent changes to the saw. That knucklehead probably is unfamiliar with the idea of improved porting for an increase in power, as Stihl did in the late 90s. So is that where the difference is? Of course, there is the difference of 1 vs 2 piece coils, but I'm talking performance. Also, in general, just looking for the whole story of the life of the 670.

Also, parts crossover. It appears the Husky 272 is the most popular saw that shares parts with the 670. Where does the compatibility stop? I understand the top end issues between the 670 and the similar huskies, such as intake, aftermarket pistons made for open transfers, etc., but what about the bottom end? What is the breakdown of clutch compatibility? How about flywheels? Did the flywheels change when the coils changed on the 670? Is there compatibility with the flywheel from a Husky?

Oh, and I got two running yesterday. The Champ has the K&N on it. Looks like I'm a couple clutches and some barnuts away from making some chips with these things. Also looks like the image isn't loading 100% right, but close enough, eh?

The Super II and the Champ basically is the same saw - but West Coast versions may blur the Picture somewhat.

The older supers and the non-supers are different.

Thanks SawTroll...

AS isn't letting me download that service bulletin. I'll try later.

Anybody have any more info about parts crossover?

The big cross over cutoff for this series of saws is the one piece vs. two piece ignition. A lot of things changed at this point. Since your 670's should all have the later one piece, the Husky's I would look for are the 272XP, 268XP, 268, and late model 61.

You did well and will enjoy running those saws.

Haha... I didn't "do" anything to get these, a guy I work with put them in my truck beyond my choice. Triple basket case, but at least none of them had top ends pulled off.

Also, had a guy from Battleground about a decade ago try to tell me his stock ~50cc Jonsered would smoke my Stihl 460. What is it with Battleground and Jonsereds?

I'm actually really excited about these saws, I'll probably keep one runner and the parts saw, then sell the other runner.

Not sure but my first saw was a 66E from Longview from a guy who used to be a dealer in the area. Those Jonsereds will make you forget your 460.

Hopefully the attachments will work again later, lots of issues on here lately, after the hacking....:msp_sad:

Hate to say it, because I absolutely love Stihls, but at home I run my 7900 more than my Stihls. Most of that has been because I have cut smaller diameter firewood this summer, and I have a 20" bar for the 7900, and nothing shorter than 28" for the Stihls.

(At work I have no choice, but I have a couple 440s with ported 460 top ends that I'd take over any other saw out there)

Old thread but I am all excited about my 670 that finally found time to repair. A fine member sent me the flywheel conductor piece and inspired to get it running went at cleaning it up.
Went through it cleaning oil pump, behind flywheel and carb cleaning. Fixed some cover screw attachments that were broken.
Fuel and oil, couple pulls and barked to life. Man I forgot how rippy the thing was, it really bucks in the hands revving it up powerhead only.
Gotta get a b&c for it and let her cut some. Have owned this saw since 1986 iirc.
