I don’t think they are that bad. It better then being unskilled with a hatchet and chopping a finger off.

My sister for example bought a house with a small fireplace insert. She doesn’t run a fire 24-7 so she is always starting a new fire. She is also not coordinated enough to run any chopping tool. I thought it would be a good way to get her kindling on her own.

I know two people with parts of fingers missing from cutting firewood. So...

I wouldn't want one of those tools. I just use the maul for kindling. Works like a charm and no chance of cutting my finger off with my technique. I imagine many do it the same way.

for some folks that may be a great tool.
