I've been down with the sickness for the past week, so no progress on the project saw. Decided I felt better enough today to get out of the house for a few minutes.
Before I got sick I has put the case halves in a bucket of diesel to soak overnight, but that turned into a several day bath. I pulled them out today, and cleaned them up the best I could (Still working with my original 625 cases for now)
All the crud washed off pretty well revealing more damage underneath then I originally thought, but I think I can still work with them. Bearing pockets are rough, but I think they will clean up. The joints for the case halves were rough and pitted as well, but cleaned up pretty well with a scotch bright pad on a die grinder.
I thought about trying to weld up and repair the cases, but it just doesn't seem worth the hassle to me. Actually, I'm not so sure that these case halves are original to each other as they don't seem to quite match and the paint is slightly different.
Anyway, I did some research on the cranks and flywheels and it seems Husky did have several different cranks and flywheels throughout the years, but all 3 of my cranks and flywheels have the same parts numbers, so I'm not going to worry about it, and use the best crank. I put the new bearings on the crank today, and have the cases inside warming up overnight and I'll attempt to put them together tomorrow. I never did have any success with finding motoseal or anything similar, So I'm going to use Blue RTV.
One last note, I was watching a Ironhorse video awhile back and he was talking about adding JB weld to the cases under the cylinder to trying to make a smoother passage/flow for the air going to the transfers. He was working on a 372XP, and the 266XP style cases seem to have a bit more slope above the bearing pockets, so I don't think I'm going to mess with it.
