it does not matter. you cannot build an automobile from raw materials in 48 man hours. Especially with the skilled trades sitting on their asses 75% of the time.
I think it does matter. Did you work there in the 1980s or did you work there in 2010? Today a huge amount of the work is done by robots. So when did you work for Fisher Body?

As a labor hand, you must have been jealous of the skilled trades. They made much more money that you did and from your perspective they did much less work. Heck, if you had stuck with the business you could be a skilled trade today. Are you better off in your lifetime net worth than you would be if you had stuck with the union? How about at retirement time?

Quit arguing with him. He has read one to many union pamphlets of propaganda

Back to the jealousy thing again? It's really not that hard to get in a union. Pay up and your in its not like it's some secret society.

Is that right? I guarantee that if you saw my income you would trade me. So go down to your local operators hall and tell them you want a card. Get back to us on what happens. You get a card and I will get you a job in my company making 200+ a year total compensation.

Hell, PM me and I'll give you the cell phone of my local's BA.

I have never been jealous of anyone. I appreciated my job at fisher body. I didn't know any skilled trades guys at the time, that came later.

I moved on. Designed and built Nuclear power plants and chemical processing plants. I have been around. Refueled Nuclear power plants. Had a lot of fun.

Yes. I have not been a slave to any master. I have lived the life of a free man. It does not get any better than that.
So did you work for Fisher Body in the 1970s or the 1980s? Obviously things have changed since you've been there. Steadily the corporations have reduced man hours per unit to where they are today but you don't care about those facts. Robots have taken most of the line jobs you held over the last 30 years. You also dodge the fact that you are worse off financially than you would have been had you stayed and moved up from laborer to skilled trade.

Sorry things didn't work out better for you, but don't hate me because I stuck with it and moved up.

I was offered help getting in the operators and getting called out. Turned it down. No interest in dealing with lazy, incompetent, greedy, self serving unions and giving my money to a them which in turn is used to support a political party that is h+ll bent in turning this once great country into their socialist utopia. No thanks. I love what I do and wish I made a bit more money at it but I pay my bills, spend time with my daughter, and play around on my farm. Life is good

I think he is right where he wants to be.

Good story. Get you a card and then get back to me.

Your so smart...answer this. How hard would it be for an owner operator to get a card? I had an excavating business for 5 yrs and worked off and on for one another couple years before that so seven or eight years worth of running equipment. Gave it all up about 7 years ago.

I have no idea how you reached that conclusion. I designed the first robotic packaging line installed in Dow Chemical. I have more money than I will live to spend.
Why would I hate you? My brother is a union firefighter, works 9 days a month and makes over 100K a year and pays no social security. It is all good. I just did it without anyone strong arming the folks I worked for. Some people can't do that. I did it all on my own merits.
I was going to tell him to go read the thread about day jobs but figured you would clue him in when he needed it.

I have nothing but respect for your accomplishments. This is the internet where talk is cheap and it takes time to separate the basement dwellers from the producers. So why are you hiding the timeframe when you worked for Fisher Body? Are you disputing the fact that todays cost for union auto workers is $2,400 per unit? I am being lazy or I'd have posted my source long ago.

You seem to think you can just get a union card. I'm calling your bluff. Go down to your nearest 132 office (that's my local) and see if you can buy a card. If you can, I can hook you up with a job that pays real money. You will get to see how easy it is.

I don't think reading comprehension is his strength. He has a good thing going for himself. He just has a hard time understanding that some of us just don't need the help of a union to live a good life.
Hilarious.

That would depend on whether or not the local needed operators bad enough to bring in newbies. If the local had all of their help working, and all of the travelers on the books working, they might test in. If so, and you passed the OQ, you would be at the bottom of the list. That still puts you a long way from having a card.

You can. I think it was $180. Took an hour on the phone and full out some forms. (Can't remember details as it was last winter when we did it for my step dad when he needed a job. Nope he never got called out but he had a good non union job before it was time to pay the first months dues.) Then monthly dues and sign the book to wait for a call out.

I already have the answer to the question.

Life lesson for you.
In an argument never ask a question that you don't already know the answer

I learned that in my first year in college which was 1993. I am familiar with the process of getting a card in your state since I have one. Like I said, go get one. If you can buy one for $180 I will reimburse you the expense. If not, what will you offer me?
