The 6401-7901 would be great for just about anything. I would stay with the 18 inch b&C until you really need a longer b&c. Then I would go to max.24 inch on the 6401.
BTW I like and my girlfriend loves my decomp Makita DCS 5001. Really nice to start.

It was .404" semi chisel skip on the .063" GB 36" hard nose. I have since buried the bar in hardwood and it struggles but will cut. With 3/8" semi chisel skip on the same bar it runs fine in green wood, slow but OK in dead Aussie hardwood. Even though everyone raves about them they are still a VERY under rated saw by many people, particularly 372XP and 460 Mag owners :)

I just had one, and sold it for a 460. It was awesome with a 20" bar. An 18 is too short IMO cause of the big dawgs on it. It rips for a 64cc saw. I haven't found another 64cc size saw that will outcut it.
