TN,
Hello to all,& HAPPY NEW YEAR I've got that Mall 12 A that the piston won't break free. I think I've tried it all.I want to save this old boy, even if it won't run again I can still make it look nice. But not willing to give up,and in no rush. any body there with info.? Thanks Aaron Francisco

john,
Whadaya throw a net over that saw then get on behind it, grab it with a death grip, pull the net off and start saw`n til it runs outa gas?

You`re the master of Mpeg!

love the sound of an old amll that runs. i know i got a few saws freed up by dumping some pb blaster downt he cylinder and then stuffing a 3/8" extension down the spark plug hole if you can and then beating on it with a hammer.

Lube and Beat

Yea it sounds like porno. but some WD-45 or Blaster a couple times a day for about three days. Then use a piece of doll rod that fits the spark plug hole and wrap it gently. It should free up if its not welded. I have freed up several pistons with this method. Good luck! John

dont give up! try PB BLASTER may take a month, be careful small taps everyday w/PB will do the trick. many more HAPPY NEW YEARS. nfp:blob2:

Try getting an old spark plug and break off the porcelin and electrodes, then weld on a piece of 1/8" pipe with a zerk grease fitting. Screw the spark plug into the head and gently pump in grease and it should free the piston as long as the piston is above the ports. GOOD LUCK

i never though of that one for getting them to move initialy but the only thing that i would worry about would cleaning out all of the greese afterwords

Bruce that sounds like an idea. Good mind you have there. Sounds like you know whats going on here & have done this before. As far as cleaning the grease out I would have to think that Iwould have the muffler off and when she broke free and worked it good add some gas to free up the grease. And then do it again. That sounds like it will work... Thanks Aaron Francisco p.s. hay' Guys, ? When i download a pic. to show a saw it comes back that I have exeeded the space .

Free it up

Better yet let's fill the bore up with pb blaster get a fitting that matches up with the thread of the spark plug hole then put an air pressure fitting on that and go.

Howdy,

I can attest to the power of the zerk fitting/grease idea. I have seen where guys have put a zerk fitting on a gear box on a trimmer and have blown the entire shaft full to the point of pushing all the bearing bushings up to the motor end - and then the complaint was "all that excessive vibration"!

In case you ever wondered, this is why zerk fittings are not put on those gear boxes.

A couple things to keep in mind here about how to free that piston:

1. Grease guns can generate the high pressures needed. Your air supply usually isn't more than 175 psi. That's not much for this work.

2. Air is compressible. Think about what'll happen when that piston breaks loose with 175 pounds in the jug. BANG! Not only will the piston move fast, you'll blow grease at high pressure out of the exhaust and intake ports. The same thing'll happen with the small amount of air trapped when using a grease gun, but it won't be as spectacular.

MAll 12

nice pic... andrew, I've have the same thing. I can't wait to get this old beast going. nothing better than bring back the old saw's. The way I look at it if it all runs good it gives me no challenge.:)
