Melted 038 Cover

Hi all at AS.Doing up an 038M with melted top cover above exhaust.I know of 2 other saws with this problem.Muffler halves seem good.Going to glue some thin aluminium under the next cover I get.Is this a common problem with the 038?
BTW seems it has been hot on top of the oil tank also.

It's pretty common... at least on 038's that have been ridden hard. I use Reflect-A-Cool on the underside of the cover as well as atop the oil tank.

In long extended cuts that muffler gets really hot, it will melt the plastic covers easily so the reflective foil is a good idea, it will help but its not the absolute cure all. Long cuts in hardwood may still cause some scorching of adjacent plastics.

I have two 038 Super project saws. Both had melted covers. Here's what I did: aluminum sheet, JB Weld, sand, paint. Only time will tell how they hold up.

Since China now makes them I guess a guy could keep a spare or two on hand..On the plastic saws like the 390 it's good to put reflective tape above the muffler as well as below it. I've seen the 390 saws burn right through the oil tank top..
