Wanted some opinions on how to proceed with a bad purchase here.

I wish not to mention the members name who sold this saw to me unless it becomes necessary. I'm trying to keep this private between the member and I.

I was able to get the member to respond to the PM by emailing him at his PayPal address. I paid friends and family style as the seller seemed pretty trustworthy and I have never had a bad dealing here or anywhere else.

I also asked if the piston was ok. I got a bad pic. My mistake number one was not asking for more. I have a feeling now that I didn't get more because he knew it was bad.

Saw is an 036. Was listed as "runs and idles great, starts on 3rd pull". The seller responded to my PM one time 3 days ago, but then never resurfaced.

The pics are to follow. The plating in the jug is worn through on the exhaust and intake side. I could not get the saw to start before disassembly. The inside of the saw was covered in a goopy grey oily substance that resembles the Moly lube one uses to install a camshaft.

The base gasket was not OEM and looked relatively new, so someone was in this saw.

I asked the seller to supply me with a usable jug and all would be good. That was 3 days ago.

I may be premature in this posting, but that's why I won't mention the seller by name.

Interested in opinions on how to proceed. I guess I'm lucky in that it's my first bad dealing, and the fix shouldn't be that expensive. It's more of a principle issue here.

Thanks guys.

I can see both sides of this deal. You made a mistake in judgement of the saw/seller, but if the seller continues these sales, he will become not trustworthy and unable to make a sale.
Hopefully the seller did not know the saw was in this bad of condition when he sold it.
Hope everything works out, but most sales are as is.

I wouldn't have bought that in the first place. The picture supplied to you shows the inside of the muffler is aluminum grey in color, big red flag. Something to keep in mind for the future.

I would try to keep the communication going with him and not call him out on here. Some of the guys on here are very busy. Hopefully you hear from him soon. Good luck.

You are in a bit of a sticky situation as you bought it after seeing a pic that would suggest that things may not be copacetic.

However you do have a legitimate issue as it was not sold as described and the moly grease inside the engine suggests someone *may* have been trying to pull a fast one. Folks will put gear lube in an automotive engine to cure a light rod knock long enough for it to be the new owners problem so sadly this doesn't surprise me.

Give the guy a few more days to get in touch and make things right. It's unlikely that he randomly may have lost his phone or had a death in the family but crazier things have happened. If no luck get in touch with Darin or Mrs. Arboristsite as they usually can get a person to respond.

Good luck man. Sucks to get taken.

Sometimes all the good deals we get more than make up for the odd deal gone bad. Its just a saw and you should be able to find a good P&C somewhere along the line. The 036 is a good saw and is sure worth fixing.I will look thru my stuff and see if I have an 036 P&C which you can have for the cost of shipping which shouldn't be more than 17$.

don't kid yourself.. he knew........

That's BS everyone can say be cool and don't make big deal cause not them. Give him warning and post name so everyone has guard up when dealing with him. Don't need people like that around. It bothers me that it doesn't bother other folks on here. obviously lot of people can relate to what he did so they think not a problem to do once not while.
